Wells Cathedral

TimeOut has compiled a list of the most beautiful places in the United Kingdom. They say:

“Just take a glimpse at our new guide to the UK’s 16 most beautiful places to visit.

The top four places on our list are occupied by a Welsh seaside town, a Cornish island, a Peak District cave and a Scottish glacial valley. But rounding out the top five, and taking the crown as our number one most beautiful building in the UK, is an 800-year-old structure in Somerset: Wells Cathedral.”

I have to add that The Shambles in York comes in at number 8. This is what they say about it:

“Peering down York’s Shambles in 2026, with its overhanging buildings, rustic wooden crossbeams and characterful row of twee shops, you’d have no idea of the road’s grim past. The name ‘Shambles’ literally refers to an open-air slaughterhouse, which is what this York street was back in the 1300s.  These days all that blood and gore (and the street’s famed butchers, which stuck around until the 1800s) is long gone; leaving one of the UK’s best preserved medieval streets. There are few easier, more atmospheric ways to transport yourself back hundreds of years (without the iffy smells) than a stroll down Shambles.”

What’s your vote for our most beautiful place?

  1. This is a tough one Jo, having only seen photos of people who have visited and material available on YTI would be hard pressed to name one – and for most of us here we would have liked to see the Welsh marches and York, Middleham, even London the way it was when Richard was there – even Sudeley Castle is on my list, Ric. made many architectural improvements, as he was wont to do, but Sudeley sounds spectacular because he personally made the renovations himself, and not for military but residential purposes. So, between what Bayard’s Castle actually looked like AND Sudeley Castle would top my list. If pressed for one of these 4, natch, it would be the Shambles!
