Beautiful Mostyn Hall in Flintshire, residence of the Mostyn family since the 14th century, is to be opened to the public  from 4 to 11 July and 22 -31 August to raise money for the Stroke Association. Entry fee £10. You can read more at https://www.leaderlive.co.uk/news/26161726.public-offered-sneak-peek-inside-historic-mostyn-hall/.

The particular interest to Ricardians is that Henry Tudor (unfondly known to us as The Tydder) supposedly hid at the hall in 1485, trying to avoid Richard III’s men. He escaped, of course, and became the usurper Henry VII. He led a charmed life because Justice always managed to be looking the wrong way where he was concerned!😠

But perhaps whoever edited the article at the above link should take a second look at the following extract:-

“….In 1485, Henry Tudor (later King Henry VII) was hiding at the hall to elude capture by soldiers loyal to King Richard III. Forewarned, Henry famously escaped out the back of the property and fled to Mostyn Quay to take a boat just moments before Tudor soldiers forced their way through the front door….”

So Henry Tudor was running from his own soldiers? No wonder he always survived. I can’t help imagining the comic scene when they caught up with him and were horrified to realise they’d been pursuing their own leader! Red faces all around. 😄 Oh, I wish, I wish. Sweet alternative history!

But joking aside, although no longer as it was in the 15th century, Mostyn Hall is a magnificent old house. It’s well worth seizing this chance to visit and the proceeds will go to a very worthy cause, the Stroke Association.

You can read more about the house and its history at:

PS: In the pursuit of a smile, I have to draw attention to a sentence in the Mostyn Estates link above: “….Today, a visit to Mostyn hall is not complete without a viewing of the ‘King’s Hole’….” No comment. Honest….

  2. hmmm, vielleicht musste er tatsächlich vor Walisern flüchten! Soooo beliebt war er in Wales ja wohl eher nicht. Deshalb müssen es nicht unbedingt “Soldaten König Richards” gewesen sein!

    1. Korrekt, aber nicht alle Waliser unterstützten Tudor.
