For those of you who do not know, Appleby is the county town of Westmorland and it’s full name is Appleby-in-Westmorland. Its castle dates back to the early 12th century, and as you can see in the top photograph (all photographs by Knight Frank), it’s still quite something to look at today, with a grand motte, large bailey and a handsome, more modern residence facing the motte from the boundary.
