A Ricardian Tour de Force – by a German!

On Thurs 24th April, members of the Yorkshire Branch visited York St John’s University to view Philipp Sommer’s one man presentation of “Re-lording Richard 3.0”.

L to R
Yorkshire Branch Member Rosemarie Fenwick,  Actor & Author Philipp Sommer, Blanc Sanglier Editor Dr Alison Harrop.

Philipp is a noted German actor, and this was his first presentation in English, and what an impressive ‘tour de force’ it was. A witty and emotional Richard is in the 500 year long waiting room of the afterlife, where he analyses his own life and that of his family and contemporaries. He dissects and scorns his Shakespearean portrayal and exhibits acute anguish at the too early loss of his father, brothers, wife and son, a high point of the drama.

We thought this an excellent portrayal of an all too human Richard by an extremely talented young actor speaking in his second language.

The show may transfer to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. If it does, do see it. No true Ricardian will be disappointed.

I’m delighted that my fears expressed in https://murreyandblue.co.uk/2025/04/17/will-richard-iii-get-his-own-back-on-shakespeare/ are proved wrong! ☺️
