You may have often heard that people in medieval times were very dirty and unhygienic, with bad teeth. However, this has now been debunked as a myth and this article explains some of the practices they used to keep clean. They mention that teeth were cleaned, but not with a brush. They either used a stick, as the article describes, or a cloth to rub their teeth. It also states that the nobility were more likely to have tooth decay because they ate sweeter foods, which is true, and Richard is mentioned because his teeth showed signs of decay when his remains were found. You may also have heard of Henry Tudor’s brown teeth and horrible breath!

Peasants had less decay but their teeth were usually more worn down, because they ate coarse bread which often contained grit.
