I have been experimenting with some free AI apps. I’m in two minds about them – they are incredibly clever, but, as an artist and writer, I feel they cannot be a good thing for the livelihoods of creative people.

Anyway, I decided to see if this app would create a good image of Richard. I put in the prompt: ‘King Richard III wearing shining armour on a white horse.’

I got a picture of a bearded king, much older than our Richard, maybe Richard I? I tried again adding, ‘without a beard’. I got another similar pic of a Richard I lookalike. I tried adding ‘cleanshaven’ – same result!

Finally I put ‘A 32 year old King Richard the Third, with no facial hair, on a white charger, wearing shining armour. ‘

I got this:

Maybe AI isn’t so clever after all!

  1. Wonder if it’s to do with how you put in his regnal numbers? It could be Richard iii, Richard lll, (using a lower case L) Richard III (capital letter I) Richard 111 or even Richard 3rd – as well as using “King” which you did in the last version The software hasn’t caught up yet! But I do agree, it’s a minefield out there and the artists’, writers’ and musicians’ copyright are under threat all the time…

Interesting. I have a son who works in AI so i’m going to share with him and see what he thinks.
