Oh, lord, I didn’t know we and the Irish Republic are locking horns over two rare bronze Henry VIII cannon taken from a wreck that was apparently lying off Waterford on the Irish coast. Under Irish law, the cannon belong to them and so were taken illegally. The cannon have been on display at the Tower of London. The wreck was HMS Post, which went down in 1566 near Tramore.
“….The cannons, known as “sakers”, bore the Tudor rose and were made for King Henry VIII in the 1540s by the Owen Brothers and are two of only 10 examples of these types of cannon known to have survived the centuries – with a price tag in the early 1990s of at least £30,000 each…..”
I have no idea of the legal rights or wrongs of this situation, only that the cannon were on an English warship that foundered, carry Tudor roses, were made for Henry VIII and are now in the Tower of London. I know HMS Post went down when Elizabeth I was on the throne, but can you imagine her father’s reaction to anyone demanding the return of his property, from his vessel, from his Tower of London?
On reflection, it doesn’t bear imagining. I’ll warrant that whichever queen he had at the time would have made certain she was elsewhere until he’d calmed down. 😧 As for Elizabeth, she was a chip off the old Tudor block and the Irish would have had a snowball’s chance in Hell of receiving “their” cannon.
