The 10….sorry, strike that….the 8 best documentaries about Richard III….

This post has been prompted by the article you’ll find here: https://www.documentarytube.com/best-of/the-10-best-documentaries-about-richard-iii/. You must accept from the outset that Richard seized the throne, of course….yawn…. And one look at the image above, which shows the Tudors’ spiteful version of Richard III, seems to be an indication of the general drift. I hope that at least one of the videos (No 9) will be fair about Richard….but of course, they might manage to vandalise that as well!

The 10 documentaries in question are:-

1.   Richard III – Guilty or Innocent

2.   Facts About Richard III – History’s Most Reviled King

3.   Richard III – The Last of the Plantagenets Documentary

4.   Did King Richard III Really Murder His Own Nephews

5.   Richard II – England’s Most Tragic King Documentary

6.   King Richard III New Evidence of His Spinal Deformity

7.   Richard III – Unearthing the King’s Secrets

8.   The Tyrant Who Destroyed England’s Greatest Dynasty

9.   King Richard III The Burial of the King – Live Reburial

10. King Richard III – Unseen Footage of His Skeleton

Now, there’s a problem with the above list in that only 8 of them are about Richard III….the other two are about Richard II. Yes, truly. Which fills one with confidence as to the veracity of the entire thing. If they don’t know Richard II and Richard III are two different kings, there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell of them being accurate about anything at all!

No 5, England’s Most Tragic King isn’t about Richard III. If nothing else, the cover art above names Richard II and shows a bearded king, which would not fit Richard III at all. And a brief glance at the beginning of the video shows it’s definitely Richard of Bordeaux.

And when you reach No 8 (see image below, but not available in the UK) in this list of documentaries supposedly about Richard III….well, this too appears to be about Richard II, who is labelled The Tyrant Who Destroyed England’s Greatest Dynasty. Cue the red mist before my doubly Ricardian eyes….! I support Richards II and III, and Richard II definitely didn’t destroy England’s greatest dynasty. His scheming cousin and vile usurper, the Lancastrian Henry IV, did that when he seized the throne and murdered Richard!

So if you want to splutter into your breakfast cornflakes, give the list a read! You can see all the videos, barring No 8. Whether or not the Richard III ones are fair and worth watching I cannot say because reading the article was bad enough without labouring through the videos as well.

  1. Well, “II” and “III” do look a lot alike. Proofreading seems to be a fading art.

  2. Words fail me, really.

However, the Bolingbroke Hagiography Society appear to be just as persistent as the Tudor lot.

  3. Thank you, Vicountess. And to that I’ll add a reminder to watch/rewatch the 1984 trial, as I (finally) did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-kQoKt2Kf4&list=PLOmfBMnsXEot6f-kqZjOfR9G6NUdRsVme.

R3’s lead barrister is someone I’d always want on my side in court (Anne Sutton as well), and David Starkey–sorry, that’s Dr. Starkey to us!–in his pompous youth is a delight.

    1. Thank you for the link. I’ve taken the liberty of repeating it on Facebook, with credit to you. That trial is something all Ricardians LOVE! Thank you again.🙂
