Richard III’s Great Seal is coming home….

Liz Bateman of Mathews, at right, has been tasked with keeping temporary custody of the Great Seal of King Richard III after its sale at The Potomack Company in Alexandria. She is shown with auction house employees Jennifer Epley and Zachary Diaz. Below is the Great Seal.

The great seal of Richard III has been auctioned in the US. “….The seal, dating to 1485 and five inches in diameter, accompanies a Grant of Lieutenancy of the castle and county of Guise to Sir James Tyrell, a loyal knight who fought many battles at Richard III’s side. It was bought at auction for approximately $5,000 by the Richard the Third Society in the U.K….”

Liz Bateman of Mathews is to have temporary custody of the seal. She’s the coordinator of the Tidewater Chapter of the Richard the Third Society, American Branch.

The seal will be kept at the York Museum in York, U.K.

  2. I’m afraid I don’t know. All I can glean is that it was auctioned in the US. The how, where and why of its discovery doesn’t get a mention. Sorry.
