The New Murrey and Blue blog

I was casting around for something to watch recently and happened on a TV series called MY LADY JANE. It’s a fantasy and comedy version of the story of Lady Jane Grey…a version without the tragic real-life ending. In this version, there are shapeshifters called Ethians in the kingdom who turn into animals for half the day, and because of this they are considered evil and are persecuted. Jane decides to change this persecution, while her cousin Mary plots against her. Like the movie ‘A Knight’s Tale’, the series contains modern music and anachronisms, but also has actual history and historical figures worked into the plot–and it was filmed at the stunning castle of Herstmonceux (the night scenes look amazing!) and the lovely late medieval Great Chalfield Manor.

One part had me laughing out loud more than the others, though! Edward VI, thought dead, is really in a convent being looked after by an old woman who looked instantly and scarily familiar the moment she appeared on screen. It’s…GRANNY (should be great granny really but never mind!)…none other than Margaret Beaufort! And Margaret has a secret of her own…

A fun little TV series, which I believe is based on a novel.
