In July 1924, S. Saxon Barton, the Liverpool gynaecologist, founded the Fellowship of the White Boar, now the Richard III Society, on 6th. Also that month, John Logie Baird had a slight accident whilst inventing television and was obliged to leave his lodgings in Hastings.
Baird was part of the Caledonian tradition of scientific and literary innovators (eg Stevenson, Bell and Doyle) who left Scotland to further their careers. Although broadcasters ceased using his system in the thirties, Baird essentially invented colour television, a recording system that arguably inspired the VCR and possibly radar.
Now, as the Society’s second century starts, Baird’s inventions carry much of the debate about Richard III and history as a whole.
