The 1944 movie of Dragonwyck by Anya Seton

Lists are always appearing online, whether of the best ever, worst ever, funniest ever and so on. This list is of historical mysteries (novels) that have made it to the cinema. And the entry that is of particular interest to us is The Lost King. But the author of the list admits to “cheating” a little by mentioning Josephine Tey’s Daughter of Time. Honestly, there’s no keeping that wonderful book down! It always seems to pop up, and always being praised.

The other medieval-set novel to make it to the list is Umberto Eco’s also wonderful The Name of the Rose, the film of which is truly haunting.

The list is well worth reading because the author explains why she has chosen each title…and why there are only nine, not the customary ten.

  1. Of course Tey had to be on the list! Amazing writer whose stories stay with you like “singing sands.”
