My ignorance was revealed when I read this article because I didn’t know how old Pevensey Castle was. This ancient fortress in East Sussex dates back to the Romans in the 3rd Century, and so was about 775 years old when the Conqueror marched into it. What a pity it didn’t collapse over the Bastard! Ha! Oh, but wait, that would mean no Plantagenets…. So OK, perhaps it was as well it didn’t collapse over dear William One. It ought to have had the decency to fall in on the first Henry Tudor instead…if he ever went there.

The above article tells you much more about Pevensey Castle, including that it’s now run by English Heritage, “with tickets around £7 and family tickets just over £20”. Battle Abbey — the actual site of the Battle of Hastings — is 10 miles away to the north-east.

Both sites are well worth a visit.

  1. “Collapse on the Bastard”. Hahaha! Oh, sorry. Don’t tell my mother that I used that word. I still remember her look of shock and horror when she first heard it on American TV.

  2. Visited as a child in mid 70s… I recall there were pieces of Roman tile on display, and in evidence constructed in some of the walls. There was also on display a Roman tile that had the makers thumb print in it. I recall the guide said the castle was built as an addendum to a pre-existing Roman fort. I also recall it was said that at one time the castle was right on the shoreline of the North Sea.
