Oh dear. There are times when words simply will not suffice, and this, I fear is one of them. If you go to this site you’ll see what I mean.

Richard’s story, and the supposed fate of his nephews, has surely been done to death (sorry, no pun inended) but this time I fear it’s lamentable. Granted, the article says that the play is “roughly based on the real history of the princes in the tower”. Um, well, not the REAL story, of course, because no one knows what the real story is. But we certainly do know they were boys, not girls. This cast appears to be composed of girls. At least, I think they’re all girls.

The boys (played by girls) are Neddy and Duckie. Yes, really.  Given that Neddy is obviously the elder boy, Edward, then I imagine Duckie, the younger boy, is the Duke of York. Duckie as in Dukey? But Duckie can be taken in a number of ways, so I’m giving Dukey the benefit of the doubt. And there’s a third boy, a strange chap known as just The Boy, until he reveals “that his real name is George—the same name as the princes’ brother who passed away”. George was only two, and was the Duke of Bedford. So he clearly isn’t anything to do with the late Uncle George of Clarence.

There seem to be a LOT of silly theatricalities, and the whole thing strikes me as a pretentious pantomime without the laughs. Sorry, but that’s my opinion. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me.

  1. So I find myself wondering what was the purpose behind the writing of this play.
