What? 😧 The Irish are claiming Mumming to have been their custom first??????? I thought everyone knew mummers originated in Wales! Ha!

Apologies. Joking apart—truly, I wasn’t in earnest with the above. I know there have always been mummers all over our islands. And if anyone wants to point out that Europe has/had mummers too, I know. I’m just making a point of overlooking it. 😉

Sticking to our own little corner of the planet, I’m quite prepared to believe that our islands have always had mummers, because I’m also sure that we were all originally one people. That was before the Ancient Britons, Celts, Picts, Druids, Romans, Saxons, Vikings, Normans, Orcs, aliens and whoever else I’ve missed. But say what you will, I feel that today Christmas mummers are mainly associated with England. (And before you all rush to load your weapons, you’d best know that I will not be putting my ½ English/½ Welsh/married to a Northern Irishman head above the parapet….) 😊
