And so Sheriff Hutton was born! Who would have thought that from such beginnings would rise one of the most important castles in Yorkshire? A plot on which to enclose a wall of stone and lime to crenellate and make a castle? I wonder how many hoops John Neville would have to go through with today’s planning committees, regulations, by-laws, health and safety restrictions and so on? He’d probably build it anyway, cram it full of armed men and defy the local council to do its worst. At its peril!😄
