You never know what could be lying around in your shed….!

From the Ancient Origins link below

Amazingly, a 12th-century Norman chainmail hauberk has been found in an Irish shed.  Apart from rust, it’s in perfect condition! Unbelievable.

Not only do I find little more than useless pieces of clay pipe in my garden, but everything in my shed is guarded by an army of large, vicious warrior spiders in league with the Orcs.

But the most amazing treasures seem to gathering dust in sheds. Before this latest discovery in Ireland, I recall a 14th-century horary quadrant with a close connection to Richard II being found in a shed in Queensland, Australia. lt was in a sack of old piping! One particular article about this tickled my funnybone, I fear. I can think of no medieval king less likely to roll up his sleeves than Richard II.

Now, ladies and gentlemen, what we want is for something connected to Richard III to be similarly discovered. So, gird up your loins, don the magic ring to be invisible to Orcs, and off to your sheds with you this instant!

  1. Update — more thorough examination has concluded that the hauberk is actually a 19th century replica. ‘manganese levels in the artifact were characteristic of 19th century steel manufacture, while the rings and tailoring of the garment were not consistent with medieval mail armor making.’ Too bad, though. And no reason why a nice 15th century object shouldn’t turn up — we’ll never know unless we clean out all the corners.
