My home city of Gloucester has always appreciated Richard III, and in 1983, to celebrate it being 500 years since he’d granted Gloucester its charter, a new wood was planted to honour him. It’s on Alney Island, which is land between two channels of the River Severn on the western outskirts of the city.
From this site http://www.friendsofalneyisland.btck.co.uk : “….1983 Richard’s Wood was planted to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Charter given to the people of Gloucester by King Richard III….”
And yes, I STILL wish he’d been lain to rest in our cathedrall, in the city the name of which was in his title, Duke of Gloucester.
