All you need to know about medieval warhorses….

When I read this article, I thought I must have written it in my sleep, because it opens with a very accurate description of me as a seven-year-old. Horse mad, but at the same time I was actually terrified of them. Oh well, there’s no accounting for folk.

Anyway, I hadn’t heard of this 1996 book by Anne Hyland before, and the review is splendid. Anyone interested in the horses of the medieval period will want to have it on their shelf.

But be warned, if you’re concerned mostly with horses in Britain during “our” period, you’ll find yourself limited in general to the Normans. The book’s subtitle is accurate, and the contents cover everything from Byzantium to the Crusades. No mention of Richard III, the Wars of the Roses or even Henry VII.
