A new extension for Leicester Cathedral, thanks to Richard….

Leicester Cathedral - new concept

Since the discovery of Richard’s remains, and his final place of rest in Leicester Cathedral, everyone now knows who he was. Still is. Countless more people now question the “facts” of the gross caricature Shakespeare dreamed up after too much cheese for supper.

Now Leicester Cathedral is planning a new extension “built onto the cathedral and alterations to the floor throughout the Norman building, which was promoted from parish church to cathedral in the 1920s.” The extension can be seen on the right side of the front of the cathedral in the illustration above. I hope it helps to enhance Richard’s appeal even more!

  1. The Leicester cathedral building you see today is not Norman, but Victorian. Finished in about 1867. However the building that was there before was indeed Norman, dating to about 1086. this in turn was built on the site of an earlier Saxon church and possibly an even earlier Roman christian church. St. Martin was a Roman soldier who had converted to Christianity.

In the centre, they visited a nunnery by the Thames, a working pub in Northampton and a dig adjacent to Leicester Cathedral. […]
