Following Philippa Langley’s successful visit to Malvern a few weeks ago, the Malvern Community Partnership has arranged a coach trip to St Matthew’s Church, Coldridge in Devon on Thursday, 25 September. Those who are interested in the history of Richard III and the “Princes in the Tower” will want to see the all-important stained-glass window in the church, which is almost certainly a likeness of the elder boy, known as Edward V. For those who insist that Richard III was a child-murdering usurper, the truth is that Edward V outlived Richard and lived at Coldridge under the pseudonym John Evans. The younger boy outlived Richard as well, so you can forget those Victorian paintings of two golden-haired angels in fear of their lives. Richard III would never have laid a violent hand on his own nephews!

“….[The church] also contains the tomb of John Evans, medieval Lord of the Manor, which historians believe may be Edward’s assumed identity if he escaped….” I’m not sure he was the Lord of the Manor, but he was certainly of some standing.
