This post is to draw attention to an illustrated talk by the excellent Dr Toby Capwell, who famously rode in full armour in Richard III’s 2015 reinterment procession. It is definitely something to which to look forward. The talk is called The Scoliotic Knight: Reconstructing the real Richard III and as the title suggests concerns details of Richard’s armour.
Mind you, the blurb at this link https://shorturl.at/tZUSw contains the following about Richard: “….How could such a diminutive person, suffering from a significant spinal condition, have excelled in armoured combat?….” Hmm. Diminutive? To me that rather suggests he resembled a Hobbit. True, Richard was shorter than his eldest brother, Edward IV (over 6 feet) but he wasn’t that short. I hasten to add that I doubt if Dr Capwell had anything to do with writing the publicity blurb!
The talk will be at Leicester Cathedral on Thursday, 20 March 2025 at 7 p.m. And the charge will be £6-£8. You can book via Eventbrite at the above link.
