… is Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, is often described by modern novelists and “popular historians” as Queen Isabella’s lover, although there seems not to be any evidence for this?

A possible explanation is that his forename is now a euphemism for carnal knowledge, although this seems only to have become the case recently. It must influence some readers.

  1. Some people appear to believe that a given man and woman cannot have a relationship (business or otherwise) without sexual involvement. In addition, this particular relationship is part of a trope in certain circles where poor, persecuted Isabella gets ‘her own back’ on Edward II. That there is no real historical evidence for this does not worry them. They are more interested in their agenda than in historical truth. I could quote similar examples.

    1. Pretty much. Annoying but what can you do. Honestly, they probably just haven’t changed since primary school… if you had an opposite-sex best friend as a kid everyone would be like: “oooo they’re in loooove”! 😆
