The Country House Rescue series (all of them) are hit and miss for those who love all things medieval. But Season 4 Episode 2 is about Chapel Cleeve Manor, near Minehead in Somerset. It is a great 15th-century house with much history and is now in grave need of rescuing.
The unbelievably stoic efforts of the late Jeannie Wilkins, its then owner, seem doomed to failure. The programme introduces to her and shows us all over the house, and we see at first hand the terrible damage done by time, weather and a chronic shortage of money.
When the charming and likeable Jeannie passed away in September 2020, the house was purchased by the London-based interior designer Marten Street in January 2021. Apparently great things have been done, but this programme only shows us what Jeannie battled with. Well worth a look.
