Nowadays Rendlesham (the Forest) is often regarded as the site of Britain’s Roswell, but that’s a very recent development because it’s also where “Archaeologists have uncovered a 1,400-year-old royal Hall of the first Kings of East Anglia in Suffolk, England.”
The site was apparently first spotted from the air in 2015….but was first mentioned way back in the 8th century by the Venerable Bede. Aeons away from UFOs and such things. Bede described Rendlesham as where the “East Anglian King Aethelwold stood sponsor at the baptism of King Swithelm of the East Saxons [who reigned] between the years AD 655 and 663”. This baptism was in 662, when Aethelwold, nephew of Raedwald, converted Swithelm from paganism to Christianity.
Our Anglo-Saxon heritage is not my strong point, but I know that for many it is very interesting indeed, so I imagine this archaeological dig will be followed with huge excitement.
