We all know that an unidentified medieval stone sarcophagus containing a lead coffin was discovered close to Richard’s last resting place in Leicester. And, probably, that it proved to be that of an elderly woman.

Now there is a video of what happened when it was opened.

When they first examined the remains inside the lead coffin, the first thing that struck me was that by a strange coincidence, the skeleton appeared to be without its feet! Of course, it could just have been that the much smaller bones in the feet had fallen and/or crumbled away.

There were some familiar names from Leicester University, so I listened very carefully (always suspicious!) At first I thought that Matthew Morris of University of Leicester Archaeological Services said “we discovered” when Richard III was mentioned, but no, he said “was discovered”. 😊
