We all have different ideas about witches, from the evil crones of Shakespeare to the gorgeous Glinda in The Wizard of Oz. The reality, it seems to me, is that most “witches” were innocent women (and some men) who were victimised for a wide variety of reasons. But that’s just my opinion.
But nevertheless we’re all interested in witches and witchcraft, whether to shiver at their wickedness or to protest about their terrible persecution. This article is a potted history of the subject, from pre-history, through the arrival of Christianity to the present day.
The article deals rather lightly with Gilles de Rais and the true nature of his appalling crimes. And I’m puzzled that the Spanish Inquisition ended in the 16th century due to Freemasonry. Freemasonry apparently didn’t arrive in Spain until the early 18th century. There’s a discrepancy somewhere.
