Pristine Roman road discovered in Kent cellar….

The find started when conservationist and developer Mark Lucas and his son Zac (both pictured) bought a unit in Rochester high street. They planned to renovate and convert into a shop – without knowing the road was there

Well, discovering treasures from the past doesn’t always take the form of buried hoards or items of priceless jewellery. Now a father and son who bought a shop in Rochester, Kent, were excavating in the cellar and found the above section of Roman road. It’s absolutely pristine. I wouldn’t relish rattling along it in my tyreless, springless chariot, but it would have been a vast improvement on the muddy, rutted tracks that preceded it!
