The Conqueror’s corpse blew up at his funeral….!

It seems that William the Conqueror’s corpse “exploded” at his funeral. The thought of an exploding corpse is bad enough without actually seeing it as well. And smelling it, presumably. I can imagine all the mourners scattering in great alarm and haste. And superstitious dread as well, perhaps?

Ew. The things one comes across while looking for something else. Now I’ll think of this whenever I read about the Conqueror. Apart from the heading that William I was a British king (he wasn’t, he was the king of England) this article is fascinating, if a little gruesome.

He’s not my favourite king, and after all the dreadful things he inflicted on his conquered people I daresay he deserved such a send-off as this.

  1. It’s macabre, but I always felt it was a suitable little epilogue. Given everything we know about him.
