On the BBC news channel recently there was an item about Pete Waterman (of Stock Aitkin and Waterman fame) and his beloved model railway, which is spectacular and will feature in an upcoming showing of Timeshift on BBC 4. The episode in question is in Series 12, episode 7 of 10, entitled “The Joy of (Train) Sets”. I don’t know exactly when it goes out.

Pete Waterman and his model railway

During the interview, he mentioned that to achieve his period accuracy for his models he uses a site called Britain from Above, which contains 1000s of old aerial photographs. I took a look at the site and it is indeed very interesting. So here’s the link in case anyone else would like to take a peek.

It’s possible to look at many historic sites from above, as they were in past decades…well, as far back as aerial photography goes! Unfortunately, we need that time-machine-with-a-dashcam to take a look at Middleham Castle in the 15th century, but here it is in 1947.
