“….The season wraps up with “The Gentle Villainy of Richard III, Troubler of the Poor World’s Peace,” an adapation of William Shakespeare’s “Richard III” running April 21-May 1 at the Outcalt Theatre….”
Oh, dear (heavy sigh). Shoving the word “gentle” in front of “villainy” doesn’t make much difference. Villainy is villainy….of which the real Richard was not guilty. He wasn’t an angel either, but he certainly wasn’t the devil his detractors are always so quick to accuse him. So this production may be a “gentle” adaptation, but as it’s Shakespeare it’s still the same old, same old anti-Richard guff. I don’t care if the Bard is reckoned to be our greatest this, that and the other, when it comes to actual history he’s guilty of utter fiction! All to suit his guilt-ridden Tudor overlords.
If my dear Cleveland friend Kelly Ferjutz were still with us, she’d be as mad as me at the picture painted of Richard in this new production’s very name. She was a dedicated Ricardian.
