It so happens that I am writing about the Holands, a noble family that originated in Lancashire and rose to prominence in the 14th and 15th centuries. The town of Upholland records their name. And what should come my way? A link to old maps of Lancashire! An extract from one of these maps is shown above.
Within the link was another, to a Lancashire County Council site where various other early maps of the county can be viewed. They stretch from the 14th-century Gough map to the early OS maps of the 19th century.
Old maps are always fascinating, so even if Lancashire isn’t your particular scene, these are worth looking at. The OS maps are a reminder of what has vanished in the last hundred years…and will never be restored. What else will have disappeared before this present century is out?
