There is a new art exhibition about Richard III in Leicester.
After you’ve fought past the Leicester Mercury’s Iron Curtain of ads, the text of the article is as follows:
“A unique series of paintings created around the reinterment of King Richard III has gone on display at a city centre gallery.
“Local artist Michael Harrison was given exclusive access to all stages of the reburial process and produced a collection of work which shows the story of how Leicester reinterred a former monarch.
“The exhibition ‘Sanctuary For A King’ opened at the Cank Street Gallery today and will remain on show until May 26.
“It depicts the various aspects of the burial of King Richard III who was reinterred at Leicester Cathedral in March.
“Michael said he felt proud to be part of such a historic event.
“He said: “It was a great privilege to be present at this unique historical moment.
“”The discovery of Richard’s remains has captured the imagination of the country, and for me to be able to record the events surrounding his re-interment is an honour.
“I want to capture the sense of wonder that surrounds this occasion.
“To get down in oils the way people have engaged with this story which spans over 500 years.”
“The Cank Street exhibition was officially opened by the Dean of Leicester yesterday.
“The first work in the series will be auctioned by silent bid with all proceeds going to the ongoing work of Leicester Cathedral.
“The cathedral’s acting canon missioner, Pete Hobson, said: “It’s an unusual situation to have an artist in residence at the cathedral, but we’re very happy with how Michael has captured the essence of the reinterment in his own inimitable style.
“The money from sale of Michael’s first work will go to the cathedral, an offer which he very kindly made before the project began.”
“Michael attended Art School at Uppingham followed by Academie Julien, the old Post-Impressionist studio, in Paris in 1962.
“He has exhibited widely with a number of solo exhibitions and national open events.
“His work has been accepted for the prestigious Royal Society of British Artists and New English Art Club Annual Exhibitions at the Mall Galleries in successive years.”
